Acupuncture & Chinese Medicine Clinic as part of a traditional Chinese medicine approach to supporting circulation and musculoskeletal balance. Serving the local Point Cook community, Gua Sha involves gentle scraping techniques applied along meridians to promote blood flow, release surface tension, and assist the body’s natural regulatory processes in a controlled and professional setting.
What is Gua Sha
Gua Sha (Scarping) is a traditional external therapy in Chinese medicine with a long clinical history. It involves controlled scraping of the skin using specialised tools along specific areas and directions to stimulate surface tissues and meridians.
Rather than simply affecting the skin, Gua Sha works through the body’s surface pathways to support circulation and functional balance. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the surface of the body reflects internal conditions, making Gua Sha an important method for addressing superficial stagnation and tension.
Theoretical Basis of Gua Sha
From a Chinese medicine perspective, discomfort may arise from stagnation of Qi and blood, particularly in cases of chronic tension, stress, or postural strain. Gua Sha helps release superficial stagnation and encourages smoother circulation.
Gua Sha is often used as part of a broader treatment plan, complementing acupuncture, herbal medicine, or manual therapy.
Sensations and Skin Responses
During treatment, patients may experience warmth, mild pressure, or a relaxing sensation. After treatment, temporary marks may appear, ranging from light redness to deeper colouration.
These marks are not bruises and typically resolve naturally within a few days. Their appearance varies depending on individual constitution and condition.
Common Applications of Gua Sha
Gua Sha is commonly used to support:
- Shoulder, and upper back tension
- Postural strain from prolonged sitting or repetitive activity
- Stress-related muscular tightness
- Soft tissue recovery following physical activity
